1999 Geek Awards

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, this was a tradition started by Kelvin Lawrence the 2nd year of ColoradOS/2 in Cheyenne, and I've been doing it for the last several years at the annual Friday night pizza party, with some help from Aidon typically. The first year Kelvin actually collected fees from all the 'winners' to help buy the next round of drinks - now it's an honorary award, with nothing gained nor lost, besides a bit of embarrassment and laughter.

As a segue into the 1999 Geek Awards, I want to thank (ahem!) all my friends for never, for one SINGLE second, ALL WEEK LONG, letting me forget that I accidentally sent an email to my husband to the list a little more than a week ago. For those of you who missed the conference, you might as well hear it here first...As if it weren't enough that all of YOU on the list saw me make such a geek of myself, Wayne mentioned it at more than one Q&A - AND at the raffle session before Bill Joy showed up - you know, the group meeting where pretty much *everyone* was there *sighs* ... So by the time it was time for the Friday night Geek Awards, and Aidon introduced the Geek Awards by announcing the winner up front and reading the actual letter, everyone had already been hearing about it all week. And yes - I mentioned it in one of my own sessions as well - there was some context - but what can I say - I'm the Geekstress *grins*

Kimberly for sending a love letter to the mailing list - a week before the conference started.
Paul Van Keep for having a South Park .wav file for EVERY occasion.
Aidon for being the invisible man - where were you all week?
Jeroen for registering javasluts.com before last year's conference was even over.
Kevin McGrath for registering javaslut.com - and using it as a business site
Suzy for knowing the serial number of her first Unix box
Don Altman for having lead for his mechanical pencil delivered on the Keystone bus
Kelvin Lawrence for showing up at the party with a packing tape dispenser
Bill Gates for being a big fat predatory liar - and finally getting caught!
Mike Cowlishaw for not only being the only one to email and ask me what "sevens" meant, but for coming up with a good excuse for why he asked when I told him he'd have to "wonder till the end of time."
Mark got the Honorary Noel Bergman Award - for bringing out the big camera at the party.
Russell Coker got the Honorary Evan Bergman Award - for requesting his own geek award a month before the conference even started.
Bryan Walker for being ready to sprint to the front for a raffle prize to beat the other Brian Walker
Mike Brown and Mike Bowler a joint award, for being Wayne's "Hand Held Mikes"
Matt Osborn for climbing all the way to the 2nd peak (again!) - and then finding a chocolate brown sheep (we're not sure if it's anatomically correct or not - he wouldn't say!)
Dion for having pinker sneakers than Bailey
John Webb for checking the deja.com website every single morning, just to make sure he still has a company to work for.
Ralph Hicks for being the only person inside at the South Park Pottery shop when a whole pile of stuff clattered to the ground, and then saying he had nothing to do with it.
Russ & Nanci for having his and hers twins - a brunette and a redhead - how geeky!
Wayne and Peggy for siccing no fewer than 30 people on us to keep from presenting him with our yearly token-of-appreciation gift at the raffle where EVERYONE could have seen Wayne choke up - never again guys, never again!
Evan Bergman for toting around a box of Kosher chocolate cookies all week long.
Paul Van Keep (again) for giving out polarbar.org email addresses to everyone who got in the water at the polar bar party on Friday.
Paul Giangarra (accidentally omitted at the party) - for begging Wayne to be allowed to speak - and then coming up with a presentation title that was longer than any of the actual presentations that anyone gave all week long.
